Even though this was my 4th time to the Hawaiian Islands, our trip to start 2023 was very special. It ended up being our honeymoon! We decided to explore the Big Island for the first time and we stayed at the Outrigger Kona Resort and Spa. We loved it here. The pools were amazing with a huge water slide for all ages. The room was basic but we had paid extra for ocean front and it was totally worth the extra money. Every night we sat on our balcony and watched the Manta Rays swim right up to the edge of the cliff beneath us. We were 20 minutes from the town of Kona and we traveled into town several nights for dinner. I HIGHLY recommend Papa Kona Restaurant and Bar. It is on the north end of the downtown and it was the best food we had the entire time we were on the island. We had prearranged a tour with Kailani Tours to visit Volcano National park and experience the volcano that was erupting at night. Kailani Tours are top notch and I highly recommend them if you want some guidance on what to tour in the Volcano National Park area. It is hard to choose which coffee farm to visit; there are so many and each of them is unique. We chose to visit Thunder Mountain coffee farm and to our surprise there was a walking path that had very well preserved lava tubes. The coffee was truly amazing so I highly recommend visiting and we were so happy we chose to come here.

For our trip to Maui on the second half of honeymoon we tried something new and stayed on the north end of Maui near Napili. Our resort was Napili Kai Beach resort and we had an oceanfront room. It was everything we dreamed it would be. The beach at Napili bay is powdery and smooth. It was one of the best beaches I have ever experienced. The whales were in full party mode and it was effortless to spot them. After experiencing the Napili area it will definitely be our location of choice when we return.

As for restaurants on Maui we had a new experience at Kimo's in downtown Lahaina. I can't say enough about how amazing our food and service were. It is highly recommended to have reservations but it isn't required. You get the true authentic old school Hawaiian feel, and of course Hula Pie is a must.
